Exforge (amlodipine, valsartan) is a dual-acting high blood pressure medication, useful when a single medication isn't producing sufficient results. It's safe for use in patients age 18 and up; effects on younger patients have not been studied.

This medication contains two active ingredients, both of which are good at treating hypertension in their own right:

• Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker which prevents calcium from entering muscle cells in the heart and blood vessels. This action relaxes blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure, improves blood flow, and increases oxygen to the heart.
• Valsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker which blocks angiotensin II receptors. This action allows smooth muscles in blood vessels walls to relax, causing the widening of blood vessels. It improves blood flow, increases oxygen to the heart, and lowers blood pressure.

One can also buy Exforge's ingredients on their own, either amlodipine or valsartan. One or the other ingredient is also available in other combinations, such as Co-Diovan, which contains valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide---a diuretic---or Azor HCT, which contains amlodipine, hydrochlorothiazide, and olmesartan---a different kind of angiotensin II receptor blocker.

Exforge Basics

Exforge is a high blood pressure medication; taking it will lower blood pressure, hopefully to healthy ranges. If it doesn't, doctors may add a third medication to lower blood pressure. High blood pressure puts tremendous stress on the heart and blood vessels, which, over time, can result in severe damage to them and may lead to heart failure, kidney failure, heart attack, or stroke.

Fortunately patients who buy Exforge can eliminate this risk. The medication comes in tablets, which are taken once per day with or without food. If lifestyle changes are not made, or are not sufficient to control blood pressure, Exforge or similar medications will need to be taken for the remainder of life.

There are typically three scenarios in which treatment with Exforge begins:

1 - A doctor may determine that a single medication is unlikely to control high blood pressure, and so start new patients on Exforge:

• Treatment usually starts with 5/160 mg amlodipine/valsartan per day.
• After one or two weeks of treatment, blood pressure will be evaluated and dosage may be increased if needed.

2 - The patient is already taking individual amlodipine and valsartan tablets, and wishes to buy Exforge for the convenience of combining them:

• Treatment starts with the same dosage of individual products in a combined product.
• It is very unlikely dosage adjustments will be needed.

3 - The patient is taking either amlodipine or valsartan alone, but needs an additional medication to control blood pressure. Doctors may recommend the patient buy Exforge:

• Treatment typically (but not always) starts with the same dosage of whichever medication is already being taken. A doctor will determine the strength of the other medication.
• After one or two weeks dosage adjustments will be made if needed.

In all cases, dosage should not exceed 10/320 mg amlodipine/valsartan. It takes a week or two for significant improvement to be seen, and up to four weeks for maximum benefit.

Note that those who are taking blood pressure medications for the first time will experience symptoms of a drop in blood pressure; most notably is dizziness when getting up from sitting or laying down. This will pass as the body adjusts to its new, lower blood pressure.
